| Rethymno is surrounded by mountains. East
of the prefecture is mountain Psiloritis
(2456m), the highest and most famous of Crete.
Southwest of Psiloritis is the mountain chain of
Kerdos (1777m). At the northeast end of Rethymno
is situated mountain Kouloukounas or Talea
Mountains, while southwest of the prefecture
is mountain Kryoneritis (1312).
Rethymno is mostly mountainous with relatively
little alterations of morphology. The lowlands
are located in the north shores of Rethymno. From
the endless vineyards is produced the fine cretan
olive oil. During your tour around the prefecture
you will see the olive groves, where the famous
wine and tsikoudia (cretan grape spirit) are produced.
As you explore Rethymno you will meet the historic
town of Rethymno, Spyli, Lake Preveli, Anogia,
Plakia, Episkopi, Agia Galini and you will be
impressed by the majesty of nature which, along
with human will create beautiful villages with
structures of unique style. You will find historic
monuments all around Rethymno. Worth visiting
are the historic monasteries of Arkadion
(or Arkadi) and Preveli.
